Why Is 10k Steps All Over The News?
Tuesday Jun 06, 2023
Tuesday Jun 06, 2023
10,000 steps. It's canon at this point. That nice, round number should be our goal for the day. But WHY?? Where did this recommendation come from? Is there something magical about 10,000? What does research actually support?
Breaking down the origins of the 10,000 daily step goal has been a hot topic in media lately, in part due to a recent study published by Kosuke Inoue, MD et al in the JAMA Open Network titled “Association of Daily Step Patterns With Mortality in US Adults”. In this episode we will WALK THROUGH this study and highlight key points and takeaways.
Other points-of-interest in this episode include:
The likely origins of the 10k-per-day step recommendation
How far is 10,000 steps?
Are there actual measurable health benefits to reaching this daily goal?
Can we achieve health outcomes with less than 10k steps daily?
How can I track my steps? What if I don't want to buy a fancy health wearable tracker?
Can other forms of exercise be just as good?

Series on Symptoms (SOS): Nausea and Vomiting
Tuesday May 30, 2023
Tuesday May 30, 2023
WE'RE BACK FROM VACATION! And we're here to talk about VOMIT!
Barf, spew, upchuck, puke... whatever you call it, it's gross and unpleasant to experience. Why do our bodies do this to us??
We are starting our "Series on Symptoms"- where we take a deep dive into common symptoms that we experience, why they exist, and what to do about them.
In this episode we cover:
What causes nausea and vomiting?
What is actually happening in our bodies when we experience these symptoms?
How do these symptoms protect us?
How can we tell if we are dehydrated?
What's the best way to maintain hydration?
What are evidence-based treatments for nausea and vomiting?
When should I seek urgent medical care (i.e. go to the ER)?
Our bodies are weird, wild wonderlands, and our symptoms are little clues or puzzles that require some introspection and education to understand and respond to effectively!

COLLAB EPISODE! Our BFF Laura Danger of the Time To Lean podcast (and former YDF guest!) graciously had Julie on her pod recently, and we want to share the episode with YOU!
In this episode, Julie and Laura talk about the importance of maintaining friendship connections (and how it positively affects our health). Platonic relationships can be intimate too! They also talk about the oft-mentioned BitchyWalks, which is when they go on long walks in the neighborhood together and vent frustrations and celebrate wins :) They break down attachment styles, and the human need to maintain safe spaces to unload thoughts and feelings.
Laura has a GREAT book recommendation! Check out Platonic by Marisa G. Franco, PhD.

Do you wear a fitness tracker? Is it a wristwatch, a ring, a belt? Do these devices actually help improve our health? How can we know?
Wearable health tracking technology has grown immensely over the past decade. Yahoo Finance reports that the global consumer healthcare sensor market revenues reached US$ 49.1 billion in 2022 and by the end of 2032, the worldwide Consumer Healthcare Sensor Market size is likely to reach a valuation of US$ 94 billion.
While sales are clearly good and Your Doctor Friends have personally bought in, do we know if these are actually helping?
Ultimately, we want to ask “Will more data make us healthier?” which also happens to be the title of a NYTimes article from 2020 in the On Tech section by Shira Ovide.
Thankfully in this episode, we have an expert in performance science and wearable technology here to tell us about how accurate this data is, what data we should care about and probably most importantly, how we interpret and use this data to make us healthier.
Welcome Kristin Holmes, VP of Performance Science at WHOOP!
- Kristen has an MIT Sloan Artificial Intelligence Certificate, a Masters in Psychology and Sports Performance and is a Ph.D. Candidate, University of Queensland for Psychology
- Kristen works with hundreds of the best tactical, professional, surgical teams, corporate, and NCAA Athlete Teams in the world, helping them interpret WHOOP data to optimize training, recovery, and sleep behavior.
- Her research focuses on the temporal organization of circadian influences and their effect on physiological and psychological resilience.
- Kristen was a 3x All American, 2x Big 10 Athlete of the year at the University of Iowa, competing in both Field Hockey and Basketball.
- She also went on to be one of the most successful field hockey coaches in Ivy League history, having won 12 league titles in 13 seasons and a National Championship at Princeton University.
Topics in this episode include:
What are the basic concepts behind wearable fitness tech? (Apple Watch, Fitbit, Garmin Watch, WHOOP?)
Is the information accurate? How do we know?
Is there a location on the body (wrist, hand, forearm, waist, etc) where data collection is most accurate?
What are the most important metrics evaluated? (for example, WHOOP uses categories/scores such as "strain, recovery, and sleep")
What goes into these scores?
How should users interpret these scores?
What are common ways that users might misinterpret this data?
(and the million dollar question...) Does this data actually make us healthier??
A DEAL FOR OUR DEAR LISTENERS!

Benzos: What Should I Know About ”Chill Pills”? (with Gail Basch, MD)
Tuesday Apr 18, 2023
Tuesday Apr 18, 2023
***AUDIO ISSUE AT 20 MIN MARK CORRECTED, SORRY :)***
Xanax. Valium. Ativan. Chances are, you've heard of these medications, and you may have even been prescribed them before.
The opioid crisis has dominated headlines for the past few years, but over that same time, another drug crisis has been hiding in plain sight. Benzodiazepines (the drug class of the brands mentioned above) are an underrecognized and important contributor to the public health crisis of drug morbidity and mortality.
Benzodiazepines first came on the scene in the late 50s/early 60s to treat a variety of mental health conditions, as they are quite effective in providing calming and sedative effects.
Representation in current culture, such as in the Netflix documentary “Take Your Pills: Xanax” , and the popular memoir by Melissa Bond, “Blood Orange Night,” shed light on the use and misuse of these meds.
Needless to say, with long term use comes increased risk for addiction and physiologic dependence and we are currently seeing serious harms to people from these drugs.
Thankfully, we have our lovely friend and expert, Gail Basch, MD, FASAM here to educate!
Dr. Gail Basch is a Psychiatrist and Addiction Medicine specialist and director of the Outpatient Addiction Clinic at Rush University Medical Center and fellowship director for the Addiction Medicine fellowship at Rush.
Dr. Basch helps us understand the history and future of benzodiazepine use (and abuse), and offers wonderful educational insights into this "overlooked drug epidemic".
Topics covered in this episode include:
The origin of benzos and their mechanism of action.
How did they get so popular?
Why/how are they prescribed?
Are they effective? For what indications? Are there "better" medications out there to treat these same indications?
When should you stop taking them? What are the concerns for long-term use?
What are the side effects?
What is meant by "addiction" vs "psychological dependence'?
How can someone wean off of these medications?
What are some resources for patients and providers who want more information about benzo use and withdrawal?
Dr. Basch recommends the Ashton Manual, a wonderful resources pioneered by the incomparable Dr. Heather Ashton. A British physician and psychopharmacologist, Dr. Ashton literally "wrote the book" about benzodiazepines and our complicated relationships with this class of drugs. Check it out!
