What’s Crackin’ With Chiropractors? (with Adam Bruene, DC)
Tuesday Jul 19, 2022
Tuesday Jul 19, 2022
What's the deal with Chiropractors? Is it all about the pop/crack/adjustment? Do they only treat back issues? What's their training like? What's the science behind it? How can I find a good one??
Cue Adam Bruene, DC, CertMDT, DNSP! He is a Doctor of Chiropractic medicine with special training/certification in McKenzie Diagnosis and Treatment, as well as Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization. In this episode, Dr. Bruene de-mystifies Chiropractic medicine by explaining its roots, current practice, and hopeful future (HINT: it involves collaboration with other physical medicine folks- like MDs, DOs, PTs and more!)
OF COURSE we are gonna talk about the marriage of Chiropractic and MD/Allopathic medicine- because, as you may have guessed, Adam Bruene and Julie Bruene partnered to become the Doctors Bruene!
Kick back, relax, and come with us on this journey into ChiroWorld! And, no, you don't have to marry a Chiropractor to find a great one ;)
Dr. Adam Bruene practices at Aligned Modern Health in Chicago, IL. Find out more about him at https://alignedmodernhealth.com/people/chiropractic-physicians/dr-adam-bruene-dc-certmdt/

We don’t typically expect large-scale public violence, like a mass shooting, to happen in our hometown. Those terrible things happen far away. We hear about them on the news and are shocked, disgusted, and heartbroken. But what the f*%k do you do when it happens to you, in your community? How are you supposed to feel? How are you supposed to heal?
In this special episode, marking one week since the appalling Highland Park parade shooting, Jeremy chronicles his and his family’s harrowing personal experience at the event.
We then consult with the wonderful Rose Metivier, LCPC, a licensed therapist at Midwest Counseling and Diagnostics LLC, who has years of experience in, among other things, trauma and grief counseling. She walks us through what others are feelings and what comes next after experiencing this trauma.
Let’s all listen, connect, grieve, and heal together.
Love y’all.
AWESOME resources that Rose suggests: (you can also contact her at rose@midwestcounseling.com)
- A TON of resources for Highland Park Community specifically, and other resources here.
- Easy searches for therapists on TherapyDen.com, InclusiveTherapists.com, or PsychologyToday.com. Allows you to filter by preferences, location, specialty, and insurances accepted. People may want to search for specific trauma specialties or interventions mentioned here.
- National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Illinois: Coping With Community Violence Support Groups (English & Spanish resources forthcoming)
- National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is available 24/7 at 1-800-273-TALK (8255)
- Beyond Trauma Podcast: Podcast made by three trauma therapists in Springfield, MO that they designed specifically for people who have been through trauma.
PLEASE spend all your money at Bright Bowls in Highland Park. They sheltered Jeremy and family, as well as others, on the 4th and are just wonderful people.

IWRT: Why Can’t I Just Call My Doctor?
Tuesday Jul 05, 2022
Tuesday Jul 05, 2022
You've just got one little burning question. Now where's that doctor's phone number? Wait, who is gonna pick up on the other end of the line? Will it even be a human? Why is this so FRUSTRATING??
In this Intrusive Waiting Room Thoughts episode, Jeremy and Julie explain why it's so damn hard to get the doctor on the horn. They also give you some insider information on potentially more efficient, and certainly less anxiety-inducing, methods to get your question answered by your healthcare team.
PLUS, at one point, Jeremy tells us that he would prefer his patients to text him. Let's hope his GIF game is strong ;)
As a heads up to our listeners, this episode was recorded before the awful, tragic events that occurred on 7/4/22 in Highland Park, Illinois. Jeremy addresses this at the beginning of the episode, explaining that he is a proud resident of Highland Park and was present at the parade that day. We may address this further in the future on the podcast, keep tuned.

Just Do Kegels They Said... (with Lance Frank, DPT)
Tuesday Jun 28, 2022
Tuesday Jun 28, 2022
The pelvic floor. We all have one. We all need one that turns on and off efficiently. When the pelvic floor isn't cooperating, we can experience things like pain, incontinence, constipation, as well as back and hip pain. It can LITERALLY cause a PAIN IN YOUR ASS.
No one wants that. It doesn't matter what shape your genitals are, we can all benefit from maintaining a healthy, well-functioning pelvic floor.
Good thing we have Lance Frank, PT, DPT, MPH, a pelvic floor physical therapist to teach us how to keep ours healthy. SPOILER ALERT- its not just Kegel exercises :)

Domestic Labor is Still Labor (with Laura Danger)
Tuesday Jun 21, 2022
Tuesday Jun 21, 2022
Have you ever had a coworker who drops the ball with work tasks? They can't be trusted to complete work to the minimum standard, and you end up picking up all the slack. It's awfully frustrating, isn't it? Now imagine that YOU LIVE WITH THAT PERSON.
So many domestic partnerships fall into these unfair, unsustainable traps. One person is the "default", and is in charge of the majority of the tasks that keep the home and family running smoothly. And the other person doesn't seem to appreciate all the labor that their partner contributes. The end product is resentment and domestic discord. It sucks.
Don't believe everything that you see with beautifully curated, Insta-filtered social media posts about relationships. This is the dirty little secret no one wants to talk about.
Laura Danger to the rescue! She's a domestic equity advocate/educator and certified Fair Play facilitator. She is here to teach Julie and Jeremy how to communicate our needs, divvy up the work, and build our relationships stronger, healthier, and happier.
Find Laura Danger at http://www.thatdarnchat.com, as well as on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube with the handle @ThatDarnChat :)

The Weight of Weight Management (with Naomi Parrella, MD)
Tuesday Jun 14, 2022
Tuesday Jun 14, 2022
Fat. We've all got it. How do we know when we have too much? Does it seem like your doctor feels super uncomfortable talking to you about your weight? That's probably because they usually are...
In this episode, Julie and Jeremy consult with Dr. Naomi Parrella, who is the expert in adipose, the queen of staying lean. She is the medical director of the RUSH Center for Weight Loss and Bariatric Surgery, and she is here to give us the skinny on all things FAT.
Dr Parrella explains how we process and store energy, and how creating small habits can make BIG changes with respect to our weight. Can you be healthy and fat? Do low-carb, high protein diets really work? How can we maintain weight loss after we have achieved it?
Listen in to find out! And don't forget to rate, review and subscribe! It means the world to us :)

IWRT: Why is the doctor ALWAYS late?
Tuesday Jun 07, 2022
Tuesday Jun 07, 2022
Why can't my doctor run on time? How long am I stuck in this waiting room? Why did that person get to go ahead of me even though I WAS HERE FIRST?? Are they going to forget about me if I go to pee? Can I at least change the channel on the waiting room TV?
Julie and Jeremy have (hopefully somewhat satisfying) answers to these questions in this maiden voyage of the recurring segment we call "Intrusive Waiting Room Thoughts". We come clean as to why doctors suck so much at keeping a tight schedule. Don't worry, we will hold your place in line while you go to pee :)
